I was looking at some of Matisse’s landscape pictures of the Nice period in an old exhibition catalog from the National Gallery of Art. They look so simple! Oh, what deceptively simple, strong, supple pictures they are! I decided to pretend I am Matisse. I took a line drawing from my file and decided to fill it in with colors from imagination, part of my on-going efforts to prepare for spring. Paxatony Phil, the famous groundhog, says its coming early this year and our resident rodent Blanca the Hamster agrees.
Wow, I discover that being Matisse is much harder than it looks! And yet it is still sometimes fun to play at art.
